How to Doodle Leaving



Step 1

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of LEAVING, what would you draw? How about combining an open door, an exit sign, and an arrow. Let’s see how that will work. To begin with draw a line in the middle of your page. Then on the left of that line draw a connected rectangle as shown within the example. This will become our door opening.

Next, let’s draw our open door. To do this, use three straight lines. Notice the angles of the upper and lower lines. See how they are angling towards the middle. Here we are drawing perspective.


Step 3

To highlight the idea of LEAVING, let’s draw an arrow pointing to the open door.

Above the door, doodle an EXIT sign as shown within the example. Draw a couple of rectangles. One smaller and one larger. Then write the word EXIT within the smaller rectangle.

Step 1

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of LEARNING, what would you draw? How about combining a book with a brain? To do this, begin by doodling a cloud in the middle to right side of your page. This will become the outline of our brain.


Step 2

Next, use several curved lines to draw the brain step. Notice how the brain stem is on the bottom right side of the brain in the example.

To doodle the book, use a combination of straight and curved lines. Notice the size and angles of these lines. Also, take note of the space between the book and the brain.

In this fourth step, let’s add some more detail to our doodle. Use lines on the book to represent the pages. Then use a combination of straight and curved lines on the brain to give it a bit more detail. These now become the foundational pieces of a LEARNING doodle, however, we haven’t yet visualized the connection between the brain and the book. Let’s do that in the next step.

To visually represent the idea of LEARNING, we must connect the brain with a book using a couple of arrows. Notice how the arrows point from the brain to the book and from the book to the brain. This represents the cycle of learning and gaining knowledge from reading. Then, of course, give your doodle some color. And there you have it. This is our interpretation of LEARNING. But I’m sure there are other ways you could visualize the idea of LEARNING. How many ideas can you think of?

Step 1

If someone asked you to visualize a LEADER, what would you draw? How could we represent this in a simple way? Let’s take a look. Begin by drawing an icon of a person in the middle of your page. Use an oval shape, two curved lines and a straight line.


Step 2

Let’s give our person some more details. Use a combination of oval shapes and curved lines to draw the arms and the tie of our leader. Then for the mouth, use a straight line. This icon of a person will become our leader. However, we must now visualize the idea of LEADING.


Step 3

Let’s now draw four smaller people icons above the leader. Use a combination of oval shapes, arc shapes, and straight lines. Notice how the size of these icons is smaller than the size of our leader.


Step 4

Let’s now show that these people report directly to our leader. Use arrows for this purpose. Also, draw three lines above the leader’s head that signify that the focus is on him/her.

Step 1

drawing knockingHow could we visualize KNOCKING? This could be knocking on a door, window, table, or whatever. What’s an easy way to visualize this? Let’s give it a go. Begin your knocking doodle by drawing the backside of a fist. Use a combination of curved lines and arc shapes.


Step 2

draw knockingTo draw the thumb, use another arc shape. Then connect that arc shape to a straight line to draw the wrist of our arm. Notice the length of the lines and the spacing between them.

To draw the shirt sleeve area, use a rectangle shape. Doodle this rectangle shape right below the wrist area. Notice how the rectangle is slightly wider than the wrist area.


Step 4

To visualize that your fist is knocking on something, use a combination of v-shaped lines. Draw these interconnected v-shaped lines around the fist area as shown within the example. Notice how these lines are pointing in different directions depending on their location around the fist.

Step 1

What’s a simple and effective way to draw a representation of a KING? We could, for instance, doodle a crown. But that might represent the word ROYALTY. So, let’s take it a step further with this doodle. Begin your King doodle by combining an arc shape with a straight line. This will become the head of your king.


Step 2

To draw the body of your king, use another combination of arc shapes and straight lines. Notice the size of the arc shapes for the shoulders. Notice also how two small straight lines have been used for the neck.

To doodle the crown, use a combination of upside-down v-shapes and straight lines. Notice the angles of the three v-shapes on the crown.

Let’s now add several ornaments to our crown. Use a combination of oval shapes, straight lines, and a diamond shape to draw your crown ornaments. You can, of course, follow the example above, or experiment a little by changing up these ornaments. Feel free to use your imagination. 🙂

Step 1

If someone asked you to visualize KINDNESS, what would you draw? How about the handing over of a gift? To begin your kindness doodle, draw a square in the middle of your page.

On the left of that square, use a straight line and an elongated arc shape to draw the thumb of our hand. Notice the angle and the length of the thumb in the example above.

To represent that the hand is holding the box, we need to draw some fingers. To draw the fingers, use several more elongated arc shapes. Notice how the back two fingers are not entirely visible as they are covered by the box.

Use another square shape to draw the shirt sleeve to the left of the hand. Then add some details to the square you drew in step 1. Let’s turn this square into a present by using some v-shaped lines and arc shapes for the ribbon above the box.

If someone asked you to doodle Karate, what would you draw? How about a hand chopping a piece of wood? Begin your karate doodle by drawing the hand. Use elongated arc shapes to draw each of the fingers and thumb. Notice the length and thickness of each finger in the example.

Use for slightly curved lines to draw the shift sleeve. Notice how the four lines have been combined to create a square shape the forms the sleeve.

To draw the woodblocks, use stacked rectangle shapes. Notice how these rectangles are stacked on top of one another. Notice also the angle of these rectangles and the gap between them.

To show that the hand is actually chopping down on the wooden blocks, we must draw some motion and impact lines. On top of the arm, draw three slightly curved lines that signify that the arm motion is coming downwards. Next, use a combination of v-shapes below the woodblocks to show that there has been an impact and that the blocks have snapped in half.

If someone asked you to visualize KARAOKE, what would you draw? How could you represent the idea of karaoke in a simple doodle? Let’s give it a go. Begin your karaoke doodle by drawing a tongue. Use a combination of arc shapes and a straight line to draw your tongue.

Let’s now doodle the outer edges of our mouth. To do this, use two more arc shapes. Notice how the tongue is sticking out and covering part of the mouth.


Step 3

To draw the lips, mirror the outer border of the mouth on the inside. Then use straight lines to draw the top teeth inside the mouth. How many teeth you draw is up to you. Feel free to experiment with this.


Step 4

Having a mouth is not quite enough to visually represent the idea that someone is singing. For that, we will need a microphone. Draw your microphone using a combination or arc shapes, curved and straight lines. Notice the positioning of the microphone in relation to the mouth.

We must now represent in a visual way that the person is singing. To do this, draw a couple of notes above the microphone. Then finish things off by giving your doodle some color. Step 1

To doodle juice, let’s begin by drawing a glass. Begin by doodling an upright rectangular shape in the middle of your page. Then in the middle of this shape, draw a wavey line that will represent the juice line.

To draw the straw that we will use to sip our juice, use a combination of straight lines. Notice in the example the angles and length of each line. Notice also how a part of the straw is sticking out at the top of our glass.

At this stage, the liquid we are drinking could literally be anything. We, therefore, need to show the idea that we are drinking some kind of juice. How about lemon juice? To draw your lemon, use a combination of an oval shape and an arc shape.

Use several straight lines and another oval shape to draw the inside of your lemon. Notice the spacing of the lines and how they all come together at the center.

Step 1

To doodle a jug, begin by drawing a u-shaped line in the middle of your page. Notice in the example the length and curvature of this line. Notice also how it is wider on the bottom and more narrow on top. This will become the body of your jug.

To draw the top of your jug, use an elongated rectangle shape. Notice how the rectangle shape is slightly wider than the top part of the jug. It extends slightly outside the line borders.

For the very top part of your jug, use a combination of straight and curved lines. Notice how the left side curves upward and has a higher peak than the right side. Notice also how this section is slightly narrower than the elongated rectangle you drew in step 2.

For the handle of your jug, use a combination of v-shaped lines and straight lines. Notice the length and angles of these lines within the example.

Add the finishing touches to your jug doodle by adding some cordial and giving it some color. And there we have a simple doodle of a jug. I want to now challenge you to either draw the jug a different way or to draw it facing the opposite way.
