How to Doodle Unemployed

Step 1

drawing unemployed

If someone asked you to draw the idea of UNEMPLOYMENT or UNEMPLOYED, what would you draw? When I think about the idea of someone being unemployed, I picture someone job hunting. But that would be difficult to draw. A simpler way to go about this would be to picture them standing on the side of the street begging for money. That would be a much easier way to get the idea across. So let’s doodle that. Begin your doodle by drawing two halves of a rectangle. Make sure the two halves are facing each other and that there is a slight gap between them. These two rectangle halves will become the outline of our sign.

Step 2

draw unemployed

Next, use an arc shape to draw the head of the icon figure in this doodle. We are going to keep this very simple. No need to add any details to the head. All you want here is to just draw what looks like a head sticking out behind the sign.

Step 3

doodling unemployed

Let’s now show that our cartoon figure is holding up the sign. No, this doesn’t involve drawing complicated hands. Drawing hands is a skill that takes a little while to master. We will keep this very simple and just draw three fingers on each side of the sign. These three fingers are holding up the sign in front of our cartoon character. We really don’t need to make it any more complicated than this.

Step 4

doodle unemployed

Let’s now add some details to our sign. With no details on our sign, this doodle could mean anything. This is why having a bit of detail here is very important. To represent the idea that this cartoon figure is unemployed, let’s first add the word “NO” to the sign. Then right next to the word, let’s draw a very simple representation of money. There are, of course, a number of ways you could do this. This is just one way to draw money.

Step 5

How to doodle unemployed

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of the idea of someone being UNEMPLOYED. Notice that we didn’t use the word “unemployed”. We rather represented that idea in a visual way that gets the message across that this is exactly what we mean. And that’s how visual note-taking works. Try to keep your doodles as simple as possible. Do enough to get the right idea across. But this is just one of many ways we could have drawn UNEMPLOYMENT. How many other ways can you think of?

How to Doodle an Understanding

How to Doodle an Understanding

Step 1

drawing an understanding

If someone asked you to visualize an UNDERSTANDING, what would you draw? This is a tricky one, as it’s not a tangible word or physical object. However, when it comes to “creating an understanding”, two people agreeing on an idea come to mind. So let’s go with that. Begin your doodle by drawing two icon characters on your page. Use oval shapes for their heads and a combination of arc shapes for their body.

Step 2

draw an understanding

Between the two icon people, let’s draw a light-bulb. This will be the shared “thought” that create an understanding between the two characters. Use a combination of arc shapes and straight lines to draw your light-bulb. There are various ways to draw a light-bulb, so feel free to experiment.

Step 3

doodling an understanding

Let’s now add a cloud share around the light-bulb. We are adding a cloud shape to encapsulate this shared thought between our two icon characters. You will notice in the example that I have left a couple of gaps within the cloud shape. This has been done on purpose as you will see in the next step.

Step 4

doodle an understanding

Within those two gaps and extending from each character’s head, draw three small oval shapes. These oval shapes represent the thought projection that leads to the shared idea and the mutual understanding that the characters have about that idea. Also, add several straight lines above each character’s head and also around the light-bulb. This gives us the impression that they are actively thinking about this idea.

Step 5

how to doodle an understanding

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of an UNDERSTANDING. In retrospect, instead of drawing a light-bulb, we could have drawn a handshake within the thought bubble. But that would be a bit more difficult to doodle. A light-bulb gets more or less the same message across. But, please feel free to experiment by drawing a handshake in the thought bubble, or anything else that comes to mind. Anything that helps get the message across that these characters have reached a mutual understanding about something.

How to Doodle Underpants

Step 1

drawing underpants

Underpants come in all shapes and sizes. There are, therefore, multiple ways we could go about drawing underwear. Let’s look at one way in this example. Begin your underwear doodle by drawing an elongated rectangle on your page.

Step 2

draw underpants

Below the rectangle, you drew in step 1, use a combination of straight lines and arc shapes to draw the bottom section of the underwear. No need to make these lines perfect. However, what you are trying to do is to make both the left and right sides symmetrical.

Step 3

doodling underpants

Now, use two additional arc shapes for the holes for the legs. Notice in the example where these arc shapes touch the outer layer of the underwear. This probably now looks like underwear that a female would wear. But that’s all about to change. 🙂

Step 4

doodle underpants

Use three additional arc shapes on the front of your underwear doodle. These arc shapes emphasize certain areas that are common amongst the male species. And just like that, female underwear turns into male underwear. 🙂

Step 5

how to doodle underpants

Add the finishing touches to your underwear doodle by adding some shading lines on the waist strap and by giving your doodle some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of underwear. How many other ways can you think of to doodle underwear?

How to Doodle Uncertain

How to Doodle Uncertain

Step 1

drawing uncertain

If someone was to ask you to visualize the idea of someone or something being uncertain, what would you draw? Let’s do something a little different and fun with this one. 🙂 Begin your doodle by drawing an oval near the bottom of your page.

Step 2

draw uncertain

Now, within that oval, let’s doodle a face using a combination of lines and arc shapes. You will notice by the facial expression that this face looks rather uncertain and confused. This could well be enough to express the idea of UNCERTAINTY in a visual way. But let’s go a little further.

Step 3

doodling uncertain

Let’s turn this head into the bottom of a question mark. Use curved lines and an arc shape to draw the top section of the question mark as shown within the example.

Step 4

doodle uncertain

Now, let’s draw a face on the top part of the question mark. Use several arc shapes for the eyes and then another one for the nose. Then use a v-shape for the mouth. Notice how our question mark face is staring at the original face we drew in step #1. Here the doodle head is posing a question, but the question isn’t yielding and answer, and so uncertainty does certainly exist. 🙂

Step 5

how to doodle uncertain

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of UNCERTAINTY or of something or someone being UNCERTAIN about something. A simple doodle you can use as part of your visual notes. But because the word UNCERTAINTY can be interpreted in so many different ways, consider how else it could be visualized on paper.

How to Doodle an Umbrella

Step 1

drawing an umbrella

On the surface, drawing an umbrella seems relatively straightforward. Let’s, however, go the extra mile within this doodle to put our umbrella into proper context. Begin your umbrella doodle using a combination of four arc shapes. One large arc shape for the top surface area of the umbrella, and three small arc shapes for each wing of the umbrella.

Step 2

draw an umbrella

Use a curved line to draw the handle of your umbrella. Then add a few more details to the top fo the umbrella using lines and an oval shape. We now have a very straightforward and simple drawing of an umbrella. But let’s give our doodle some context.

Step 3

doodling an umbrella

Let’s draw a raincloud above our umbrella. Use a straight line for the bottom of the cloud, then several arc shapes for the top area of the cloud. You can either copy the example or create something that looks similar. No need for it to look exactly as you see above.

Step 4

doodle an umbrella

To signify that this is a raincloud and that we are in the middle of a rain shower, let’s doodle droplets of rain falling down from our raincloud onto the umbrella. Use arc shapes that meet at a pointed tip as you draw each raindrop.

Step 5

how to doodle an umbrella

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of an umbrella within the context of a rain shower. How many other ways can you think of to draw an umbrella?

How to Doodle a Turtle

Step 1

drawing a turtle

If someone asked you to draw a turtle, what kind of turtle would you draw? Maybe, not so much “what kind”, but rather in what way? Let’s draw a turtle from one possible perspective. Begin by drawing the turtle’s shell. Use a couple of arc shapes to draw the upper and lower section of the turtle’s shell. Notice also how the turtle shell is on a bit of an angle.

Step 2

draw a turtle

Use a couple of elongated arc shapes to draw the turtle’s head. If you notice in the example, I have used two arc shapes of different depths to draw the head of the turtle. Notice also the head and neck positioning and how it is extending out of the shell area.

Step 3

doodling a turtle

Use several additional arc shapes for the turtle’s legs and one more for the tail. Notice in the example how the legs closer to us (left legs) are drawn in full. While the legs further away from us are only partly visible. It is, therefore, easier to draw the left legs first, then to draw the right legs.

Step 4

doodle a turtle

Let’s now give the turtle a little more detail. First, let’s decorate the turtle’s shell. Draw cloud shapes on the turtle’s shell as shown in the example. Your drawing doesn’t need to look like the example. Feel free to create your own pattern of cloud shapes on the shell. Then use an oval shape for the eye and a curved line for the mouth.

Step 5

how to doodle a turtle

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. Notice how the legs further away from us are a slightly darker green color. This is a simple shadow effect. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of what a turtle looks like. To challenge yourself, you can, however, try drawing your turtle from another angle. Give it a go and see what you come up with.

How to Doodle Toxic

Step 1

drawing toxic

If someone asked you to draw the idea of something being Toxic or Poisonous, what would you draw? How about a creepy looking bottle with a skull? Let’s give it a go. Use one curved u-shaped like to draw the body of your bottle. Notice how the bottle is wider on the bottom and narrows quite considerably near the top.

Step 2

draw toxic

Use a combination of straight lines and arc shapes to draw the lid for our bottle. Then use two additional arc shapes to draw the border of our label on the body of the bottle.

Step 3

doodling toxic

For the skull part of our doodle, use a combination of arc-shapes, ovals, straight lines, and a triangle. Notice the size of the eyes and nose in relation to the head of our skull in the example.

Step 4

doodle toxic

To make this bottle look slightly more toxic, let’s draw crossbones. Use a combination of straight lines and arc shapes to draw the bones. Notice how the bones are angled at 45-degrees away from the skull area.

Step 5

how to doodle toxic

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of Toxic or Poison. How many other ways can you think of to draw the idea of something being toxic in a simple way?

how to doodle thinking

How to Doodle Thinking

How to Doodle Thinking

Step 1

drawing thinking

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of THINKING, what would you draw? When I think about the idea of THINKING, I visualize a head and a mechanism of some sort working inside that head that generates the thoughts. Let’s see if we can draw this out. Begin by drawing an arc shape in the middle of your page. Notice the size and width of this arc shape in the example. This will become the back and top of our head doodle.

Step 2

draw thinking

Next, let’s draw the front of the head. Specifically, the nose, chin and neck area. Use a combination of arc shapes and curved lines to draw the outline of these areas. This now completes the head area of our doodle. Next, we will look what’s happening inside the head when we have a thought.

Step 3

doodling thinking

Let’s now draw the thought processing that is going on inside the head. To visualize this, let’s draw a couple of cogs in a wheel. Use a combination of oval shapes and straight lines to draw your two cogs. Notice how one of them is a little smaller than the other.

Step 4

doodle thinking

Next, surround your cogs using a cloud shape. We are using a cloud shape here because it helps symbolize a thought process going on inside the head. The cloud shape is essentially a combination of small arc shapes drawn around the two cogs.

Step 5

how to doodle thinking

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of THINKING. We have the head, then inside the head we have cogs in a wheel that symbolize the thought process churning away inside the brain. How many other ways can you think of to visualize the idea of THINKING about something?

how to doodle teamwork

How to Doodle Teamwork

How to Doodle Teamwork

Step 1

drawing teamwork

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of TEAMWORK, what would you draw? We could go about this a number of different ways. Let’s, however, look at a very simple icon heavy example. Begin your Teamwork doodle by drawing three small ovals on your page. Notice how these ovals are spaced in the example. These ovals will become the heads of your icon characters.

Step 2

draw teamwork

Use arc shapes to draw a body for each of your icon characters. The arc shapes are used for the left side, the right side and the lower body area. Here we now have three individual characters. We must, however, show that they are a team and working together for the same objective or goal.

Step 3

doodling teamwork

To show that these icon characters are interconnected, let’s link them together by using a Venn Diagram. Simply draw a circle around each character. Notice how you are not drawing a full circle. You are just drawing the circle from the head to the body. Notice also how the circles overlap in the middle. This will be important for our next step.

Step 4

doodle teamwork

Where the Venn Diagram overlaps, that is where each of our characters share a mutual interest. In other words, where it overlaps, that is where we will place our goal. And to represent our goal, we will draw a simple star shape. However, you can draw another shape that would symbolize a mutual goal. This now highlights that everyone is working towards the same goal as a team.

Step 5

how to doodle teamwork

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of TEAMWORK. Can you see the symbolism here and how it works in a doodle format? How many other ways can you think of to visualize the idea of teamwork in the form of a simple doodle?

How to Doodle Teaching

Step 1

drawing teaching

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of TEACHING, what would you draw? Let’s draw a very simple classroom scene using basic icons to get this idea across in our visual notes. First, begin by drawing the whiteboard. Notice how straight lines were used for all sides of the whiteboard. Notice also how a gap was left on the left side of the whiteboard. We will fill this gap in a little later. You can also write A, B, C on the board, or anything else you like to demonstrate a lesson plan.

Step 2

draw teaching

Let’s now draw a very simple person icon. This icon will become our teacher. Use an oval shape for the head and arc shapes for the body of our icon character.

Step 3

doodling teaching

Let’s now show that our teacher is going through something on our whiteboard. To do this, we will draw a very simple arm and a pointer. Use a combination of straight lines and an arc shape to draw the teacher’s arm and pointer.

Step 4

doodle teaching

It’s not really teaching unless we have an audience. Let’s draw our audience of pupils or students using simple icons. Again, use an oval shape for each head and arc shapes for the body. No need to add additional details. This pretty much gets the idea across that these icons are students.

Step 5

how to doodle teaching

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. Also, add three straight lines above the teachers and above one of the student’s heads to indicate that they are talking or engaged in a conversation. You will also notice that I filled in the gap on the whiteboard. So there we have it. This is our visual representation of TEACHING something. How many other ways can you think of to draw the idea of teaching something?
