How to Doodle a Padlock

Step 1

draw a padlock

To doodle a padlock, begin by drawing a rectangle or square in the middle of your page. The rectangle doesn’t need to be perfect. The corners also don’t need to be sharp. They can be slightly rounded.

Step 2

drawing a padlock

Use an arc shape and place it on top of the rectangle you drew in step 1. Notice the size of this arc shape shown in the example and how it is positioned on the body of the padlock.

Step 3

doodling a padlock

Now draw another large arc shape around the arc shape you drew in step 2. Notice that the spacing between the two arc shapes is even throughout.

Step 4

doodle a padlock

Use a combination of arc shapes and straight lines to draw the keyhole of your padlock. Keyholes, of course, come in various shapes and sizes. This too, therefore, doesn’t need to be perfect. Feel free to change this up in your own way.

Step 5

how to doodle a padlock

How to Doodle Ordinary

Step 1

drawing ordinary

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of being ORDINARY, what would you draw? Let’s give it a go and see what we come up with. First of all, let’s draw an icon of a person. Use an oval shape along with several curved lines to draw the head and body of our figure.

Step 2

draw ordinary

In the second step, let’s draw what we did in the first step four more times. However, this time, let’s miniaturize our drawings. Draw two icon figures to the right of our main figure, and two more to the left.

Step 3

doodling ordinary

Let’s now give all our icon characters a tie. Use a combination of v-shapes for this purpose. You can, however, doodle the tie without lifting your pencil. Start at the neck, then progressively work your way down then up again.

Step 4

doodle ordinary

Let’s now doodle a disgusted facial expression on our central icon character. Use dots and curved lines for this purpose. Add three lines above the character’s head to symbolize highlight the emotional reaction.

Step 5

how to doodle ordinary

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is one way of visualizing ORDINARY. How many other ways can you think of to visualize the idea of being ordinary?

How to Doodle Opposite

Step 1

drawing opposite

If someone asked you to visualize OPPOSITE, what would you draw? I think the idea of OPPOSITES can be summed up within the first step of this doodle. Simply, drawing two arrows pointing in opposite directions helps us to get this idea across. But let’s add another element to this.

Step 2

draw opposite

Draw four small oval shapes alongside each of the arrows. Then within the oval shapes, draw a dot. These ovals will become the wheels of two cars that we are going to draw in the next step.

Step 3

doodling opposite

Use a combination of arc shapes and straight lines to draw the body of the two cars. Notice in the example how the cars are angled. This, of course, adds a layer of complexity to the doodle. But it’s good practice to draw various objects using different angles and positions.

Step 4

doodle opposite

Add some more details to your two cars by drawing the exhaust. Also, use a line to split the windows in half. One half will be for the front driver, and the other half will be for the passengers sitting in the back seat. Oh, and don’t forget to use a cloud shape to show the smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Step 5

how to doodle opposite

Finish off your OPPOSITE doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is one of many representations of the word OPPOSITE. How many other ways can you think of to visually represent this word?

How to Doodle an Opportunity

How to Doodle an Opportunity

Step 1

drawing an opportunity

If someone asked you to visualize an OPPORTUNITY, what would you draw? Here, we would need to visually represent something valuable that is within our reach. Let’s give it a go. Begin your doodle by drawing a straight line with a spiral at each end.

Step 2

draw an opportunity

Hanging down from this spiraled line, draw seven straight vertical lines of different lengths. Then at the end of each line, draw a diamond shape. Notice how one of the lines is far longer than the others. This will become a significant piece of our opportunity doodle.

Step 3

doodling an opportunity

Below the diamond shapes, draw an oval shape. This oval shape will represent the head of our doodle character. Notice how the oval shape has been placed to the left of the lowest diamond.

Step 4

doodle an opportunity

Let’s now show that our doodle character is reaching out for the lowest diamond. Use straight lines and small oval shapes to draw the body of our doodle character. Notice how the back is a little arched. Notice also how the knees as slightly bent.

Step 5

how to doodle an opportunity

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And for that extra effect, add several straight lines around the middle diamond. This highlights the idea that it is shining and instantly increases its value. 🙂 And there we have it. This is our visual representation of an OPPORTUNITY. How to Doodle Open

How to Doodle Open

Step 1

drawing open

If someone asked you to visualize the idea of OPENING something, what would you draw? How about a combination of an open box and an arrow? To begin your doodle, draw a rectangle in the middle of your page. Notice how the rectangle is leaning slightly towards the right.

Step 2

draw open

To make our rectangle look like a box, we need to draw it in 3D. Do this using 5 straight lines. Notice within the example the angle and length of each of these lines. Notice also how these lines mirror the angles of the lines we drew in step 1.

Step 3

doodling open

Let’s now demonstrate that the lid of the box is open. To do this, draw three straight lines at the very top of our box drawing. Notice the length of the lines within the example.

Step 4

doodle open

Let’s draw another open section of the box. To the left of the box, doodle 3 more straight lines. Notice again the angle and length of these lines. This gives us the impression that this is part of the top section of the box that is uncovered.

Step 5

how to doodle open

To demonstrate the idea of something being open, draw an arrow pointing upwards on your box. This arrow is pointing to the opening of the box within our doodle. This now helps represent the idea that something is OPEN. Finally, add the finishing touches to your box by giving it some color. Notice how the inside of the box is a darker shade of color. This makes our box look a little more realistic within this example. How many other ways can you think of to doodle the idea of OPENING something?

how to doodle an officer

How to Doodle a Police Officer

How to Doodle a Police Officer

Step 1

drawing an officer

How could we doodle a police officer in a simple way? Let’s take a look at one example. Begin your doodle by drawing the police officer’s head and ears. Use three arc shapes for this purpose. Notice the side of the ears and where they are positioned on the side of the officer’s head.

Step 2

draw an officer

Use a combination of straight lines and a couple of arc shapes to draw the officer’s hat. Notice in the example the angles of the straight lines. These, of course, don’t have to be perfect. Doodling isn’t about perfection, but rather about getting your ideas across in an effective way.

Step 3

doodling an officer

Use two curved lines to draw the shoulders and body of our police officer. Then use a straight line to connect the two curved lines. When doodling, we don’t have to draw too many details. But you can see here, that even with minimal details that our police officer doodle is very quickly coming together.

Step 4

doodle an officer

To help distinguish that this is a police officer, let’s just add a few more details in this step. First, draw a star on the police officer’s hat. then use a combination of straight and curved lines to draw the police officer’s tie and badge.

Step 5

how to doodle an officer

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of a police officer. As you can see, we added enough detail for us to distinguish that this is a police officer, but not too much detail. No facial details have been added, as these aren’t necessary. However, feel free to add facial details to your doodle to help express a specific emotion. Or, add long hair to your police officer to change his gender. 🙂

how to doodle an obstacle

How to Doodle an Obstacle

How to Doodle an Obstacle

Step 1

drawing an obstacle

If someone asked you to visualize an OBSTACLE, what would you draw? Let’s begin by drawing a horizontal line near the bottom of our page. Label the left end of the line with an A, and the right end of the line with a B. Then draw a rectangle in the middle.

Step 2

draw an obstacle

Our rectangle will become a wall that is standing between Point A and Point B.  To make it look like a wall, let’s draw several horizontal and vertical lines. Notice how the vertical lines don’t quite line up. They are all rather placed within gaps. This now becomes our representation of a brick wall.

Step 3

doodling an obstacle

Let’s now doodle a simple representation of a person on the left side of our brick wall. For this example, I have used a simple stick figure. I used straight lines and oval shapes to draw my stick figure. Notice how the stick figure is reaching over and touching its chin. This is a contemplative pose that gives us the impression that he/she is thinking about how to potentially scale the wall.

Step 4

doodle an obstacle

At Point B, let’s draw a representation of a goal. To represent our goal, let’s doodle a star. I used 5 v-shapes to draw my star. I also used straight lines to represent that the star is shining. Our star now becomes our goal. And the brick wall, of course, represents the obstacle that stands between our stick figure character and the goal.

Step 5

how to doodle an obstacle

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. Notice how two shades of red were used to color in the bricks on our wall. And there we have it. This is our representation of an OBSTACLE. Our cartoon character is at Point A but wants to get to Point B. However, the brick wall or obstacle stands in his/her way. A simple visual representation that gets our message across. How many other ways can you think of to draw an obstacle?

How to Doodle an Oath

Step 1

drawing an oath

If someone asked you to visualize an OATH, what would you draw? One of the best ways to represent this visually is to draw an oath hand gesture. These hand gestures, can, of course, vary from culture to culture. So in this example, let’s just look at one of them. To begin your oath doodle, draw three fingers. Use elongated arc shapes. Notice how the fingers are positioned side by side with no space between them.

Step 2

draw an oath

Draw the little pinky finger using an elongated oval shape. Then use a combination of a straight line and an arc shape for the nail on the pinky. Notice how the pinky is pointing down toward the palm.

Step 3

doodling an oath

Use a combination of arc shapes and curved lines to draw the thumb and the palm area of your hand. This can be a little tricky, so make sure to pay attention to the angles and length of the lines used in the example.

Step 4

how to doodle an oath 04

Use straight lines to draw the shirt sleeve on the wrist area of the hand. Notice how the line angles a little differently on the right side of the shirt sleeve. It isn’t necessary to draw it this way, but it can add a little more realism to your drawing.

Step 5
