Drawing Skills

One of the fundamental skills of visual thinking will take you back to your pre-school years when you simply couldn’t resist putting your thoughts down on paper. Those days might be long gone by now, and the drawing skills might have faded away into oblivion.

However, it’s important to recognize that you do not need to be an artist to become a proficient and effective visual thinker. In fact, it’s probably best that you are not an artist, and rather stick to drawing simple shapes and stick-figures that you learned to create in kindergarten.

When it comes to visual thinking, it’s not so much about the “look” of your visuals, it’s rather about the message that they project and subsequently the ideas and breakthroughs you are able to generate as a result. Simple and clear visuals are much better than beautiful and complex visuals. This applies as much to the process of sketching as it does to color selection. Simple sketches, limited color selection and a clear message is the way to go.

There are a variety of very easy sketching techniques that you will quickly master that will allow you to do the following:

  • Combine simple shapes to create meaningful pictures.
  • Emotionalize characters’ actions to express feeling.
  • Simulate movement to indicate direction and speed.
  • Create depth and space.
  • And much, much more.
