How to Doodle Warm

Step 1

If someone asked you to doodle the idea of WARMTH or feeling WARM, what would you doodle? The first thing that comes to mind for me is a thermometer heating up in the sun in the middle of summer. Let’s, therefore, take a look at how we can represent this visually. To begin with, let’s draw the body of our thermometer. Starting on the bottom of your page, draw an oval with a gap at the top. From there, draw an elongated curved line that will become the top part of our thermometer.

how to doodle warm01

Step 2

At the moment we have something that could pass for a thermometer. We do, however, need to add a few more details for it to be recognized as such. Begin by drawing another open oval shape inside the original open oval shape you drew in Step 1. Then from there, draw another elongated curved line extending from that oval shape. It’s pretty much a mirror of what we drew in Step 1. Then inside the oval shape draw a teardrop as shown below.

how to doodle warm02

Step 3

So, now we have what looks very much like a thermometer. Now we need to highlight that it’s a warm day. To do this, let’s draw a sun shining down on our thermometer. Use another oval shape to represent the sun. Notice in the example that the sun is partially hidden by the thermometer.

how to doodle warm03

Step 4

At the moment, having that oval next to our thermometer doesn’t quite represent a sun. The oval could just as easily be a moon or a ball of some sort. We, therefore, need to draw rays extending from our sun. To do this, use straight lines (some short and some long) extending from the oval outward. Then on your thermometer, let’s add a few horizontal lines to highlight the different temperature levels that can be displayed.

how to doodle warm04

Step 5

The final step is to give our thermometer and sun doodle some color. I’ve chosen to use standard colors in the example below. Yellow represents the sun, and red represents the temperature indicator. As always, feel free to experiment with the colors. And so, there we have it. This becomes our visual representation of WARMTH or WARM. How many other ways could you represent the idea of WARMTH using a doodle?

How to Doodle Wallet

Step 1

how to doodle wallet 01

In this tutorial, let’s break down how to doodle a wallet. Let’s try to keep our doodle as simple as possible using basic shapes from our visual alphabet. Begin by drawing a rectangle on the right side of your page. Notice how the lines of this rectangle have differing lengths. Notice also how one of the lines is curved. Inside this rectangle draw a small oval shape. This will become the locking mechanism for our wallet. It will ensure that our hard-earned money doesn’t fall out. ๐Ÿ™‚

Step 2

how to doodle wallet 02

Let’s now doodle the main body of our wallet. Use long lines for this purpose. Your lines don’t need to be perfectly straight. In fact, slightly curved lines will make the wallet look more realistic. You can, of course, experiment with the size of the lines. For instance, you can elongate the wallet more than what I did in this example.

Step 3

how to doodle wallet 03

Next, let’s make our wallet look a little more realistic. To do this, let’s show that the wallet opens outward. It’s one of those open and close wallets that doesn’t have a zipper but rather a button clip that holds both sections of the wallet together. To draw this section, use a couple of curved lines as shown in the example.

Step 4

how to doodle wallet 04

Adding further details to our wallet can not only give it some more personality, but will also help it look more realistic. Lines can be used to give our wallet breadth, depth and texture. For this example, let’s use lines to add some texture to our wallet. Specifically, use several straight lines. Then on the bottom left, I’ve drawn a rectangle with a squiggle in the middle. This is my way of branding this wallet. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Feel free to play around with how you design your wallet.

Step 5

how to doodle wallet full

The final step is to add a splash of color. Notice in the example how I’ve chosen different shades of brown. You can, of course, use a different color scheme. Feel free to play around with this. And if you’ve created a unique pattern or design on your wallet, you will have even more freedom to play around with the colors.

Step 1

how to doodle waiting 01

If someone asked you to create a simple doodle that represents the idea of WAITING, what would you draw? Let’s give it a go. Begin by drawing a square on the left side of your page. Notice how the vertical lines are quite straight while the horizontal lines are slightly curved. This imperfect square will become the back part of a chair.

Step 2

how to doodle waiting 02

Next, let’s give the chair four legs to stand on. Do this by using straight vertical and horizontal lines. Notice in the example how the legs that are closest to the back of the chair are longer, while the legs at the front of the chair are shorter. Also, notice how the legs that are closer (the longer legs) slightly block the shorter legs. To doodle this you will need to draw the back (longer) legs first, then the shorter legs afterward. And, when you’re done, you will have a doodle of a very simple chair.

Step 3

how to doodle waiting 03

Let’s now doodle someone sitting patiently in this chair waiting for something. Let’s not make this too complicated. Remember that the idea with doodling is to doodle simple concepts that will help get our ideas across as quickly as possible without much effort. To draw this person, begin by doodling an oval above the chair. This will become the head. Then for the neck and shoulders, draw a couple of lines that connect to the chair. Now add a little more detail to the head by drawing curved lines to represent the hair. Feel free to change up the hairstyle. Experiment with male and female characters.

Step 4

how to doodle waiting 04

Showing a person sitting in a chair doesn’t quite yet represent the concept of WAITING for something. However, adding a clockface to our doodle can certainly help us get this idea across far more effectively. To doodle your clockface, begin by drawing a circle on the right side of your page. Now use straight lines to doodle the hands of your clock.

Step 5

how to doodle waiting

The final step is to give your doodle some color. Feel free to play around with the colors. And there we have it. This is our doodle representation of WAITING. How many other ways can you think of to representing WAITING in a simple doodle?

How to Doodle Wagon

Step 1

how to doodle wagon

To doodle a wagon, begin by drawing a couple of circles near the bottom of your page. Make sure to space out these circles at a reasonable distance from each other. Then inside those circles, draw a smaller circle. You will now have four circles on your page. These circles will become the wheel of your wagon doodle.

Step 2

how to doodle wagon 02

Next, let’s draw the top section of our wagon doodle. For this top section, draw a couple of elongated rectangles. Draw a bigger rectangle on the bottom, and a smaller and very narrow rectangle on top of the big one. Make sure that your rectangles are connected. Also, notice that I left a space between the big rectangle and the wheels.

Step 3

how to doodle wagon 03

Let’s now connect the wheels of our wagon doodle to the main body. Do this by drawing a couple of straight lines connecting each wheel to the top section. Notice how these lines are angled in a 45-degree direction.

Step 4

how to doodle wagon 04

Now let’s use straight lines to doodle the handle of our wagon. Begin by connecting the lines to the back of the wagon. Then extend the lines on a 45-degree angle upward and above the main body of your wagon. Use additional interconnecting straight lines to create a handle as shown in the doodle above.

Step 5

how to doodle wagon 1

Finish off by giving your wagon doodle some color. You can, of course, be a little creative here and use a multitude of colors. You can even doodle a design on the side of the body of your wagon to give it some personality. I decided to be plain and boring with my wagon doodle. However, I would like to encourage you to use your imagination. ๐Ÿ™‚

How to Doodle Unemployed

How to Doodle Unemployed

Step 1

drawing unemployed

If someone asked you to draw the idea of UNEMPLOYMENT or UNEMPLOYED, what would you draw? When I think about the idea of someone being unemployed, I picture someone job hunting. But that would be difficult to draw. A simpler way to go about this would be to picture them standing on the side of the street begging for money. That would be a much easier way to get the idea across. So let’s doodle that. Begin your doodle by drawing two halves of a rectangle. Make sure the two halves are facing each other and that there is a slight gap between them. These two rectangle halves will become the outline of our sign.

Step 2

draw unemployed

Next, use an arc shape to draw the head of the icon figure in this doodle. We are going to keep this very simple. No need to add any details to the head. All you want here is to just draw what looks like a head sticking out behind the sign.

Step 3

doodling unemployed

Let’s now show that our cartoon figure is holding up the sign. No, this doesn’t involve drawing complicated hands. Drawing hands is a skill that takes a little while to master. We will keep this very simple and just draw three fingers on each side of the sign. These three fingers are holding up the sign in front of our cartoon character. We really don’t need to make it any more complicated than this.

Step 4

doodle unemployed

Let’s now add some details to our sign. With no details on our sign, this doodle could mean anything. This is why having a bit of detail here is very important. To represent the idea that this cartoon figure is unemployed, let’s first add the word “NO” to the sign. Then right next to the word, let’s draw a very simple representation of money. There are, of course, a number of ways you could do this. This is just one way to draw money.

Step 5

How to doodle unemployed

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of the idea of someone being UNEMPLOYED. Notice that we didn’t use the word “unemployed”. We rather represented that idea in a visual way that gets the message across that this is exactly what we mean. And that’s how visual note-taking works. Try to keep your doodles as simple as possible. Do enough to get the right idea across. But this is just one of many ways we could have drawn UNEMPLOYMENT. How many other ways can you think of?

how to doodle an understanding

How to Doodle an Understanding

How to Doodle an Understanding

Step 1

drawing an understanding

If someone asked you to visualize an UNDERSTANDING, what would you draw? This is a tricky one, as it’s not a tangible word or physical object. However, when it comes to “creating an understanding”, two people agreeing on an idea come to mind. So let’s go with that. Begin your doodle by drawing two icon characters on your page. Use oval shapes for their heads and a combination of arc shapes for their body.

Step 2

draw an understanding

Between the two icon people, let’s draw a light-bulb. This will be the shared “thought” that create an understanding between the two characters. Use a combination of arc shapes and straight lines to draw your light-bulb. There are various ways to draw a light-bulb, so feel free to experiment.

Step 3

doodling an understanding

Let’s now add a cloud share around the light-bulb. We are adding a cloud shape to encapsulate this shared thought between our two icon characters. You will notice in the example that I have left a couple of gaps within the cloud shape. This has been done on purpose as you will see in the next step.

Step 4

doodle an understanding

Within those two gaps and extending from each character’s head, draw three small oval shapes. These oval shapes represent the thought projection that leads to the shared idea and the mutual understanding that the characters have about that idea. Also, add several straight lines above each character’s head and also around the light-bulb. This gives us the impression that they are actively thinking about this idea.

Step 5

how to doodle an understanding

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of an UNDERSTANDING. In retrospect, instead of drawing a light-bulb, we could have drawn a handshake within the thought bubble. But that would be a bit more difficult to doodle. A light-bulb gets more or less the same message across. But, please feel free to experiment by drawing a handshake in the thought bubble, or anything else that comes to mind. Anything that helps get the message across that these characters have reached a mutual understanding about something.

How to Doodle Underpants

Step 1

drawing underpants

Underpants come in all shapes and sizes. There are, therefore, multiple ways we could go about drawing underwear. Let’s look at one way in this example. Begin your underwear doodle by drawing an elongated rectangle on your page.

Step 2

draw underpants

Below the rectangle, you drew in step 1, use a combination of straight lines and arc shapes to draw the bottom section of the underwear. No need to make these lines perfect. However, what you are trying to do is to make both the left and right sides symmetrical.

Step 3

doodling underpants

Now, use two additional arc shapes for the holes for the legs. Notice in the example where these arc shapes touch the outer layer of the underwear. This probably now looks like underwear that a female would wear. But that’s all about to change. ๐Ÿ™‚

Step 4

doodle underpants

Use three additional arc shapes on the front of your underwear doodle. These arc shapes emphasize certain areas that are common amongst the male species. And just like that, female underwear turns into male underwear. ๐Ÿ™‚

Step 5

how to doodle underpants

Add the finishing touches to your underwear doodle by adding some shading lines on the waist strap and by giving your doodle some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of underwear. How many other ways can you think of to doodle underwear?

How to Doodle Uncertain

Step 1

drawing uncertain

If someone was to ask you to visualize the idea of someone or something being uncertain, what would you draw? Let’s do something a little different and fun with this one. ๐Ÿ™‚ Begin your doodle by drawing an oval near the bottom of your page.

Step 2

draw uncertain

Now, within that oval, let’s doodle a face using a combination of lines and arc shapes. You will notice by the facial expression that this face looks rather uncertain and confused. This could well be enough to express the idea of UNCERTAINTY in a visual way. But let’s go a little further.

Step 3

doodling uncertain

Let’s turn this head into the bottom of a question mark. Use curved lines and an arc shape to draw the top section of the question mark as shown within the example.

Step 4

doodle uncertain

Now, let’s draw a face on the top part of the question mark. Use several arc shapes for the eyes and then another one for the nose. Then use a v-shape for the mouth. Notice how our question mark face is staring at the original face we drew in step #1. Here the doodle head is posing a question, but the question isn’t yielding and answer, and so uncertainty does certainly exist. ๐Ÿ™‚

Step 5

how to doodle uncertain

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of UNCERTAINTY or of something or someone being UNCERTAIN about something. A simple doodle you can use as part of your visual notes. But because the word UNCERTAINTY can be interpreted in so many different ways, consider how else it could be visualized on paper.

How to Doodle an Umbrella

Step 1

drawing an umbrella

On the surface, drawing an umbrella seems relatively straightforward. Let’s, however, go the extra mile within this doodle to put our umbrella into proper context. Begin your umbrella doodle using a combination of four arc shapes. One large arc shape for the top surface area of the umbrella, and three small arc shapes for each wing of the umbrella.

Step 2

draw an umbrella

Use a curved line to draw the handle of your umbrella. Then add a few more details to the top fo the umbrella using lines and an oval shape. We now have a very straightforward and simple drawing of an umbrella. But let’s give our doodle some context.

Step 3

doodling an umbrella

Let’s draw a raincloud above our umbrella. Use a straight line for the bottom of the cloud, then several arc shapes for the top area of the cloud. You can either copy the example or create something that looks similar. No need for it to look exactly as you see above.

Step 4

doodle an umbrella

To signify that this is a raincloud and that we are in the middle of a rain shower, let’s doodle droplets of rain falling down from our raincloud onto the umbrella. Use arc shapes that meet at a pointed tip as you draw each raindrop.

Step 5

how to doodle an umbrella

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of an umbrella within the context of a rain shower. How many other ways can you think of to draw an umbrella?

How to Doodle a Turtle

Step 1

drawing a turtle

If someone asked you to draw a turtle, what kind of turtle would you draw? Maybe, not so much “what kind”, but rather in what way? Let’s draw a turtle from one possible perspective. Begin by drawing the turtle’s shell. Use a couple of arc shapes to draw the upper and lower section of the turtle’s shell. Notice also how the turtle shell is on a bit of an angle.

Step 2

draw a turtle

Use a couple of elongated arc shapes to draw the turtle’s head. If you notice in the example, I have used two arc shapes of different depths to draw the head of the turtle. Notice also the head and neck positioning and how it is extending out of the shell area.

Step 3

doodling a turtle

Use several additional arc shapes for the turtle’s legs and one more for the tail. Notice in the example how the legs closer to us (left legs) are drawn in full. While the legs further away from us are only partly visible. It is, therefore, easier to draw the left legs first, then to draw the right legs.

Step 4

doodle a turtle

Let’s now give the turtle a little more detail. First, let’s decorate the turtle’s shell. Draw cloud shapes on the turtle’s shell as shown in the example. Your drawing doesn’t need to look like the example. Feel free to create your own pattern of cloud shapes on the shell. Then use an oval shape for the eye and a curved line for the mouth.

Step 5

how to doodle a turtle

Add the finishing touches to your doodle by giving it some color. Notice how the legs further away from us are a slightly darker green color. This is a simple shadow effect. And there we have it. This is our visual representation of what a turtle looks like. To challenge yourself, you can, however, try drawing your turtle from another angle. Give it a go and see what you come up with.
