Day 18 – Doodling Heads of All Shapes and Sizes

On Day 18 of this course let’s bring the last few lessons together and continue to build upon your doodling skills. Today we will specifically look at human heads. Okay, maybe not quite human. Let’s call them cartoon heads instead. What you will find is that cartoon heads come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Literally any closed shape can easily become a head with a little imagination.

Doodling Heads of All Shapes and Sizes

Within the doodle world, human heads come in a variety of shapes and sizes. In fact, any closed shape can be turned into a human head just as easily as any squiggle can be turned into a human face.

Within this lesson I want to challenge you to take everything you have learned over the past few days and use that knowledge today to doodle a variety of human heads.

When we think of doodling a standard human head it normally comes in the shape of a circle or oval. However, what if we were to doodle a square head, rectangle head, pear-shaped head, triangle head, or just a random blobby kind of head? Could we still make these heads look human? Let’s see:

doodling head shapes

As you can see from my example we can turn pretty much any shape into a human head. This is of course very good news for those who have difficulty drawing a circle. Human heads don’t need to be circles, and you certainly don’t need to create a perfect circle in order to doodle a human head. What’s more is that as we alter the shape of the human head the character immediately has more personality. Therefore each of the human heads above are distinct in the way they look and also in the personality they project. This of course adds life to our doodles and makes them immediately more appealing to the eye.

Below you will find some more examples of some wacky, crazy and silly head shapes. Have fun with these doodles because there really are no rules. ????

My Early Attempts at Doodling Human Heads

Below you will find my attempts at doodling various human head shapes when I was first getting starting with doodling.

Your Turn

First of all, take some time to copy my examples of human heads within this lesson. To get better at doodling it’s necessary to model the work of others. In this way you pick up certain techniques and methods of doodling that you can then take as your own. However, what you will find is that some characteristics of my doodles you will keep in your doodles, but there will also be many other characteristics that you will adapt and make your own. And that’s perfectly fine, and in fact encouraged.

When you’re done with the first exercise, below you will find six blank doodle heads for you to fill in. Copy these doodle heads into your notebook or tablet and then go to work doodling random facial features that give these doodles character and life. Alternatively you can download these heads in pdf format below.
